Skipton is a market town in north Yorkshire, England, located on both the River Aire and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. Skipton's name is derived from the Old English for Sheep and Town - it being so-named because of its prosperity over many years as a market town for sheep and woollen goods. Skipton is near to Embsay, Cononley, Oakworth, Cowling, Threshfield, and Gargrave and is one of more than 200 towns or villages in Yorkshire in which Go2 has cottages or holidays lets available. The closest cities are Leeds (population 443,247), Ripon (population 16,468), and Manchester (which has a population of 394,269 according to the 2001 Census).
